Top 3 Life Lessons from History

Top 3 Life Lessons from History
1. Not everything that I know to be normal in my family hasn't always been social acceptable because I grew up in a biracial household. Although it was still happening throughout history that doesn't mean that it was praised, so I find that interesting and I'm thankful for the changes that were made for interracial families.
2. You need to watch how you treat people. Even if they seem insignificant to you they can come back with a vengeance like the Native Americans did.
3. A little competition is okay if it brings about helpful change. Although the Cold War was still a "war" it brought about many technological advances in the NASA world and also brought the world great pride for their country and their advancements.

Free Choice - The Great Society

The Great Society
There were many different programs implemented in the 1960's. The most important of the 9 categories of programs in my opinion were

  • Health
  • War on Poverty
  • Civil Rights
The health category focuses on Medicaid and Medicare which help young and old people get medical attention when needed without worrying about the price. These programs still help families in low poverty situations receive medical attention today.

War on Poverty means to end the gap between the rich and poor. Its helping build the future up by incorporating programs like Job Corps that prepare young people in fields that help them maintain a sustainable life beyond school. Also food stamps were put in place to help void starvation in households. I have never personally been faced with this problem or had federal assistance of food stamps but i'm sure it helps struggling families to get a meal in the table.

The Civil Rights were impactful for the African American community. Obviously even now racism is still an issue but some change was made by leaders such as MLK and Malcolm X. Programs like the Acts of 1964, 1965, and 1968 made leaps in voiding the racial separation such as making segregation illegal and providing African American people the right to vote

WWII and The Cold War

The Red Scare in America

  • There were multiple policies and acts that were started to enforce the containment policy to keep communism away from America.
  • It also drove competition between the US and the Soviet Union. The Arms Race created some unhealthy competition between the two countries.
  • The Red Scare caused people to become paranoid about Russian spies and causes multiple peoples lives because people were just pointing fingers blindly.

30's Movie Evolution

Evolution of Movie Theaters

  • Movies in the 30's were mostly silent and black and white. It was a family event and you had to use your imagination to depict what the people where trying to say. The costs for movies were 5 cents compared to today where movie prices are marked up based on quality of the theatre.
  • In modern day movies are in color mostly and play sound. 21st century technology allows for 3D and IMAX to be possible. Now with luxury movie theatres you could easily spend $100 on a movie. Normal movies also can mark up the price because leather, reclining seats. It's about 8-10 dollars normally now at a movie theater.

The Causes of World War 1

The Causes of World War 1

  • The formation of secret alliances were a problem in the alliance system. If you messed with a country with maybe not a lot of power and they were allied with a strong power now both of the countries were on you and it was an unfair fight.
An illustration of how the alliance system worked.

  • The "boom" of the war was the assassination of Franz Ferdinand who was the Archduke of Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary declared war first and thought it would be a small confrontation but the alliance system caused the conflict spread fast.
  • There were new technology and ways of fighting that were more inhumane for the time period. Trench warfare was a type of fighting where the soldiers were technically underground. This lead to stalemate and the spread of diseases from unhealthy living conditions.

Modern Day Muckraker- Emma Gonzalez

Emma Gonzalez

I chose Emma Gonzalez as my Modern Muckraker because she speaks for an issue that effects me closely. She is one of the surviving victims of the Parkland Shooting who speaks for Gun Control and Gun Safety. Gonzalez is using her voice and real life experiences to convey how important Gun Safety is. She has already had impact on multiple big corporations like Wal-Mart and Dick's Sporting Goods by having them raise their age to buy a gun to 21. She and other survivors are putting together rallies called March for Our Lives and gaining social media attention by newscasts and hashtags like #neveragain and #wecallbs. I think the reason she has made so much change opposed to other adults in the past is because she has lived through it and other teens are speaking out because it directly effects us.

Big Business and Industrialism

Big Business and Industrialism

  1.  Vertical and Horizontal integration were great for personal business but not for other competing businesses .Robber Baron Carnegie is popular for this action. His version was to help the Bessemer Process which massively produced steel which was the company he was connected with.
  2. Robber Barons Vanderbilt and Rockefeller used the same tactics to gain control of surrounding businesses by dropping their prices and stealing the competitors customers to drive them out of business then driving up their prices again because they were the only option.
  3. Darwin's theory of survival of the fittest was accepted in this time period and social Darwinism was a common term used to describe and justify the different classes. Basically the rich were rich because they worked for it and deserved it and poor people were lazy and undeserving of the same opportunities they had which is not always true.
